Basic Training

Currently two basic training programs are planned each year, one in March, the other beginning in September.

Classes are 9 weeks long, and end with a disaster simulation.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and volunteer program offers members of the public an opportunity to learn basic hands-on disaster response techniques.

The program is a 30 hour class taught over several sessions, that covers:

  • Disaster preparedness
  • Fire safety
  • Disaster medical operations
  • Light search and rescue
  • Team organization
  • Disaster psychology
  • Team organization
  • Terrorism response

Upon completion of the full 30 hour class, participants have the option to become an Active CERT Volunteer and assist professional emergency services following a disaster.

Active CERT Volunteer Requirements
  • All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

  • All volunteers must complete the 30 hour CERT Basic training.  (only one class may be missed)

  • All volunteer must complete necessary documentation.

  • All volunteers must submit to a background check (due to the sensitive nature of  potential assignments)

  • All volunteer must maintain annual training and participation requirements.

Enrolling in a CERT class does not obligate you to become an Active CERT volunteer.
